Arsene Wenger has said
the fact that very few English players played in the opening week of the
Premier League season is really a non-issue and that quality of players will
see them through.
The opening day of the
2015/2016 Premier League campaign saw only 73 out of 276 English players
feature for their premier league sides. While this has sparked strong criticism
from the British media as well as fans, Arsene Wenger believes it is not a serious
issue and that if English players are good enough, they will play.
When asked
about the issue in his press conference, Wenger said “We
said many times. I can understand that mathematically it looks an issue but I
don’t think it is. Even if you play with 400 English players, the national team
manager will only have to look at 40. The 360 other ones will not come anyway
under any other scrutiny to be selected. So, what is important is how good are
the English players and I believe the 73 who made it must be really top players
because they have a lot of competition today and it’s difficult for them but as
well, it can make them better”.
Wenger has never been a
fan of the quota system as he has been saying in some of his previous press
conferences that the quota system is not exactly the way forward for English football.
