Arsene Wenger was
cautious in predicting that arsenal could win the premier league title come the
end of the season even with the recent form of the club, and the slippery form
of their major rivals.
Arsenal has been in lethal form since the New year’s day
loss against Southampton, and have defeated big teams which proved to be an
unachievable feat last season. They defeated teams like Manchester city twice,
and Manchester united in the FA cup.
Wenger however doesn’t
feel this is good enough to say arsenal are in the title race, and simply wants
to focus on his result. When asked by a reporter in his pre-match press briefing, he said “Look, we have the aspiration to win the next game, and
that’s quite good enough. After that, win the next one” When the reporter
further pressed him about the issue because it was mathematically possible, he
said “What is mathematically possible you have to try to achieve, but that
doesn’t depend only on us. What does depend on us in the final run is our
performances and our results, so let’s focus on that. After that, if everything
goes for us, you never know, but we can only master our own performances, so
let’s focus on that and be realistic and continue to earn the right to win the
game”
Arsene Wenger knows
what it is like come from a great number of points behind your opponents to end
up winning the title. In 1998, he did it against Manchester united when we were
12 points behind United, and we ended up winning the league that season. Surely
in his mind, even though he doesn’t openly admit it, he would be hoping to
achieve something like that again.
